While Obama is assembling a campaign built around class warfare, there is no serious challenge coming from his opponents which means the left is achieving its mission of creating an Anti-Tea Party to take back the debate. The victories of 2010 rewarded the insurgent party. Now Obama's people are determined to present him as the insurgent fighting against a GOP congress and big business. It's a narrative tailored to peel away enough independents and conservative Democrats to score a win and it may work.
There's been a little too much complacency after the victories of the midterm election and the weak numbers for the White House have convinced some politicians that they're fighting over a carcass. They're not.
Obama's original victory was implausible, it took extensive work, planning and money. The idea that it can't happen again should be buried deep right now. It happened once. It can happen again if we let it. The other side is not going to play by any rules, it is not going to run a conventional campaign, it will pull every dirty trick it can think of and change the game as many times as it takes to win.
OWS should be a wake up call that this election will not be a cakewalk. The failures of the coffee party and every alternative to the Tea Party created a dangerous complacency. Now the mobs are abroad and the game is being changed... and this is just the first phase of what will be the ugliest campaign ever fought...

The perception that we will win because people dislike Obama should be put to rest now. That may help us, but it will not win it for us. All that the other side has to do is convince the public to dislike our candidate even more. We will only win if we deserve to win by making this an election of ideas, not a smirking contest. Only when there is a clear dividing line drawn down the middle and when the left is hit on the consequences of its policies over and over again, while the alternative is made clear will we win.

A blog I frequent had this quote.

People just don't like to see others carrying loaded guns around in public places.

My first temptation is to say "So What?" but I think it goes deeper than that. WHY is it that people don't like to see fellow citizens carrying firearms in public?

Is it a fear that the person will do something irresponsible? Is it the thought that a public venue is so safe that being armed is utterly unnecessary?

Perhaps it is neither, but their own realization that they are utterly defenseless and dependent on others for their safety, and would rather remain in denial. Seeing a fellow citizen, armed is an obvious reminder that life carries risk. Perhaps it causes them to question their willingness and ability to protect their own lives and their loved ones.

Nah..

Anyway, the blogger points out that we are always saying that carrying in public is justified by saying that an armed citizen could save the day and, on the other hand, us saying that the unarmed and unwilling are on their own.

She sees a contradiction or a dishonesty, so let me clarify the way I see it.

What we have is the CHOICE. While it is possible that we would try and help. It is also possible that we would leave the person to their fate. I carry to protect my family and my life. That is the end of my *responsibility*. Period. I have no OBLIGATION to step in.

To the people that decide to remain unarmed I say this;

If you choose to be defenseless then you are depending on the intervention of someone else should you need them. NONE of those people, including the police, have a legal obligation to come to your aid. Odds are very high that a Policeman will NOT be there when you need them. Why? Because criminals are smart enough to wait until there are no police around to break the law.

So what are you left with?

Either you are willing to take care of yourself or you depend on the mercy of someone else, starting with the criminal, spreading out to the surrounding people and finally waiting on emergency response. Each step adds additional time and risk.

Psych 101 will teach you about a principle called "the diffusion of responsibility" That is one of the reasons that people stand around and watch a woman being beaten to death and do not step in. None of them feel it is their responsibility to respond. Some of us train to break that habit, but the vast majority do not.

Bottom line. If you think you can *depend* on anyone else to save you in a bad situation, you are kidding yourself. If you think the police can arrive in time to thwart the evil intent of a criminal, same thing.

You are in effect saying "If something bad happens today, someone, somehow, is obligated to save me and will do so."

When you tell us to not carry in public, you are in effect asking us to join you in depending on someone else for rescue.

We don't work that way. We don't think that way. We would never ask someone to put their life on the line to save us, because we weren't willing to save ourselves.

We see that as an IMMORAL request so the answer will always be "no thanks"

Japete, it isn't the guns fault when a man, set on revenge because his PREVIOUS assault was thwarted by a "Good Samaritan" comes back to finish the job. As usual, the Police were no where to be found until it was time to fill out the paper work. How about the previous assault? Any point in commenting that the MAN was dangerous?

So a good guy, came to her aid. But she didn't leave? Didn't call the police? Didn't even get a restraining order.
The outcome is a predictable snow in winter and it really is not about guns being dangerous.
Would it have been different had the pregnant mom and been armed? We don't get to know. It could hardly be worse.
What I'd love to hear is what your side would do differently and how your ideas would have changed the outcome for this woman and child, given the realities of guns in society.
We all clearly know that you think that guns are dangerous.
Let's grant that for a second and ask. So, what ideas do you have that would have kept that woman alive?

Perhaps, when men stop committing violence against women and the strong no longer attack the weak we can talk, but it hasn't happened in last 3000 years so I'm not holding my breath.

There is a gangster/thug worship that pervades the culture. There is a sense that getting caught is the bad thing, not being good in the first place. Look at the flash mobs. Sooner or later that will turn deadly. While I agree that our society has a problem, it goes both ways. Just look at how quickly the rule of law breaks down when a storm hits or others start rioting.

It says something about our culture for sure, but that doesn't change reality.

The reality on the ground is that we DO live in a society awash in guns. We live in a society that has violent aspects to it, gangs and drugs and rapes and looting. That's not changing any time soon and closing a "gun show loophole" will do nothing measurable to prevent these sort of killings.

Bad people can and do murder each other and the innocent every single day. You point it out all the time on your blog.

This incident was one of those times. It was a BAD guy, that did this (twice) and was not stopped until someone was dead.

Actually, he is wasn't even STOPPED he is still ON THE LOOSE. All the police can do is to ASK for him to turn himself in and promise to catch him if he doesn't. What do you think a man that has no trouble killing kids is going to do? Walk into the police station? I don't.

I won't be the least bit surprised if he takes someone hostage, kills someone else or a policeman, before he is really "stopped"

That is reality.

This fact is not lost on the abiding people that have millions of guns that are never used to harm anyone. They are never going to agree to give them up or give up the right to self defense with a tool equal in power to what the bad guys have and this includes having that tool on their person, more and more frequently. Not now. Not EVER. That's why the CCW laws are sweeping the nation. Why Castle Doctrine is passing everywhere and why even permit less carry has it's fans.

I said once before. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity and even though you point out when the unarmed prevail, that's not the way I'd bet.

What I asked was how the laws you support changing would have saved THIS child's life and prevented the women from being harmed.

What I want to know is, how you square all these bad people doing bad things on a regular basis with the idea of the average person should willingly disarm. Sure guns can be dangerous in the hands of the wrong person but they can also STOP a much larger attacker intent on evil for the very same reason in the hands of the law abiding.

I didn't see a SINGLE posting (I don't think EVER) where you show the police stopping a bad guy before he started shooting. They always arrive after the harm has started and you lament another mass killing.

I don't like it, but that is simply not going to change by giving the ATF more money because it's human nature that is the problem.

I imagine that the people you reach with your message are, on average, educated, law abiding people. Those are the people you are trying to convince to not own guns. The bad guys are not reading your blog, and would not take your advice anyway.

So, given the realities of the country we live in RIGHT NOW.. The only people that you will convince to disarm themselves are the one's that didn't intend to harm anyone anyway.

That's why I asked, how your ideas would actually have saved THAT kid. Not in the abstract, but in the reality of our country as it is.

I think our side readily admits that having a gun might not change a thing. Might not be used and, In fact, on occasion, might make things worse. But a little girl is dead, and I'm having a hard time imaging how it gets worse.

You clearly stated what your side wants. What I fail to see is how any of those changes make a MEASURABLE bit of difference in the reality of life in America.

Actually it seems to be the mindset of half the country. They consistently refuse to do anything to prepare themselves for the bad things that can happen in life. Not just self defense, but basic natural disasters (think Katrina or Irene), then they are utterly shocked when the government isn't there to make it all better until days or weeks after the fact (or 10 or 20 minutes in the case of needing the police)

They almost always say words to the effect of "We don't need to have [whatever] since [the Police,Fire, FEMA, SWAT, etc..] will surely save us when we need them" "Oh, and by the way, "YOU" are not qualified to do their job. So you shouldn't be ALLOWED to be in a better situation than US"
Kind of an odd class envy, since they imagine themselves in the "enlightened class" and us the neanderthals. Clinging bitterly.. Well, you know the drill..

To make matters worse, they deride anyone that takes an opposing view as paranoid, cowboy wanna be, or looking for trouble. That is UNLESS they NEED them, then they EXPECT help from the people they spend the rest of their time vociferously opposing.

They say.. "What you had a GUN and DIDN'T HELP ME?!"
The answer should be "You mean the gun you don't even want me to HAVE?"

That is why it is so shocking to them when they hear us say. "Hold on.. We are NOT the police. We are NOT going to save you. YOU should have been better prepared, cause buddy YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN"They spend their whole lives denying that they could ever "be on their own"They are torn when they see that shootings happen.

On one hand, it CAN'T happen without the Police responding immediately and saving them BUT even they see the reality of what happened "that time" so either it is an anomaly or, more likely, it is SOMEONE ELSE's fault. Must be all those folks that COULD carry, but weren't around or didn't come running to their aid. No way, the people involved should have been prepared to defend themselves. That's the police's job. That's DOGMA.

So they are left with this. "Well if you are not there to save ME when I need you, then you don't NEED a gun either." The assumed entitlement of that mind set should be stunning to anyone that's read "the grasshopper and the ant" but whatever..

It's a mind set of people that believe that anytime they have a NEED especially in an emergency, someone else has an OBLIGATION to fill that need. They don't have emergency supplies in their cars because AAA is always there. They don't have more than a couple days food in their homes because the stores are open 24/7 They don't own a gun because the NEVER go anywhere they would need one. Like an IHOP I guess.If they lost power and water for more than three days because a tornado took out the local power lines and hit the grocery store, they would be forced to abandon their lives and seek a government shelter. They are three days from living like the folks on the news with Katrina but will deny it all day long because this time it will somehow be "different" and anyway, it CAN'T HAPPEN TO THEM.

The kicker is that it REALLY bothers them that other people not only disagree, but take concrete steps to not NEED the government at any level, because it makes them face the fact that in a BAD situation they are simply unprepared to do anything but wait for someone (anyone) ELSE to come to the rescue and if it comes to repelling gun violence. Well.. Forget about it. (better yet.. just deny it..) After all in I am preparing for something that CAN'T happen, then I must either be crazy or THEY must be wrong. They have infallible leftist DOGMA on their side, therefore.. I must be crazy and need to be restrained.

This thinking permeates their side from the basics of survival all the way to their thoughts on the role of government.

Since we live in a more or less civilized culture, the odds of any one person encountering violence or disaster are pretty low but they absolutely hate you to point out the inconsistency.

Joan, you often point out that we live in a country that has "The MOST gun deaths, of any country not at war"How do you square that with telling people that THEY don't need someway to protect themselves from GUN violence? You tell people, they don't need guns in a society that you are just as quick to point out, has a MASSIVE gun violence problem.

I assume the people you come in contact with are not usually violent criminals, so you are talking almost 100% to potential victims, not people that would initiate a crime. You are telling them. "Guns are bad. Guns are dangerous. So you should willingly disarm yourself because the risk of owning a gun outweighs the benefit and nothing BAD can happen. Just stay away from IHOPs, Coffee shops and Colleges, and you will be fine."

Sometimes a post has something that just stops me in my tracks, it's so breath taking.

In the linked post, the blogger (anti-gun blog) points out some stupid gun things.
One of the links is to a woman shot and killed in an elementary school parking lot.

So fare I'm with her, then she asked this..

I have a different take on this shooting. I am not going to try and find some nit picking detail to disagree with I'm going to ask you a much, much harder question, but first, let me answer your question.

The answer is; Right where the anti-gun folks put them, that is, somewhere ELSE or DISARMED.

You *should* be asking where were all those police to help the poor woman, and prevent her husband from taking the first shot. You should be ticked off that the Police didn't prevent this to start with.

Anyway, why in the world would you EXPECT a permit holder to step in instead of calling the police.

Like you always say. Even if he did intervene, "bad" things could happen and there is no guarantee that he wouldn't make things worse. Perhaps an errant shot would have flown towards the school or an innocent bystander. I remember in your other posts you expect perfection from permit holders in that situation.

Better to call the police and wait for them to arrive than risk it is the action I believe you advocate.

Unarmed people, dialing 911 and waiting?

Isn't that precisely what happened? Yes, the woman was killed, but no civilians, no permit holders, used guns.

In any case, you have also been outspoken about anyone carrying a gun into a school area on this blog.

In one post pointing out the guy arrested for leaving a gun (locked) in his car.

So,should a nearby permit holder have VIOLATED the laws you support by bringing a gun into a school zone? He would have to be on the parking lot of a school *with* a gun to make a difference.

Would you want him to break the laws that you advocate?

Of course, by those same rules, even if this woman had been a permit holder and even if everyone in the school had been permit holders, ALL of those guns would have been locked away in their cars or at home.

WE don't think that is a good idea, but VPC, Brady and your posts indicate that you all do so is it not fair to ask you to explain how your way is better? How it made a difference?

It's as predictable as rain that a bad guy with a gun would choose to go THERE first.

What does he know for sure?
1) She will be there to get her daughter at a predictable time.
2) There is NO ONE there that also has a gun. No one to stop him.

You think a restraining order would have stopped him?
That the GUN FREE ZONE sign would stop him?

These are the rules you support, yet you ask why WE didn't intervene?

What did you EXPECT would happen under your rules? Surely not this.

If we had OUR way she would have been armed and trained and *might* have stood a chance. There are no degrees of dead. How could it have been worse for her?

Gun Safety.

Have you ever noticed the implicit contradiction about anti-gun people?

The anti-gun people simultaneously don't want people, especially children, to see, hear touch or learn about guns but they expect them to know how to handle them safely when they, inevitably, come in contact with one

Is it not illogical to fight against education and then lament the problems caused by ignorance? That, seemingly, obvious fact seems to either be lost on them or a solution that can only be arrived at by government regulation rather than simple education.

When my children were in school I offered gun safety training to the other parents, especially the anti-gun people. My argument to them was, and is, this. No matter your stance on gun ownership and control, there is a high likelihood that you or your children are going to be come in contact with a gun at some point in your lives. It is better to be educated about the rules of safe gun handling, even if you never INTEND to be around them, than to remain ignorant. It is absolutely possible to teach gun safety without advocating gun ownership. We teach our children countless safety tips. If I say "stop drop and roll" you know what I'm talking about. Why not teach "don't touch, leave and tell an adult" the same way?

The anti gun folks argue for "common sense" Does not common sense start with an acceptance of reality?

Like it or not, we are a country where personal gun ownership is a protected right that millions of people exercise. That is not going to change in our lifetimes. How many lives could be saved if we accepted that fact and taught the basics of safe gun handling to everyone from an early age?

Self Defense and Women

I was at a website the other day that proposed that women take self defense courses as an alternative to being armed and linked to a nice page of some woman with a pile of trophies in this or that martial art. She had all kinds of "what to do if" instructions on her site and I'm sure she means well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for self defense training, especially for women, but depending on your training to overcome a 6'2" 225lb man that just "graduated" from the Attica school for boys, and lettered in weight lifting, is not going to play out like the movies. 95+% of the time a large man attacking a smaller woman wins. Sadly, it's really that simple.

I sorry if this is scary but this is what really happens..

If he closes to contact distance, you are dead. Whatever happens from then on is HIS choice, not yours. He can go from standing still to being in contact with you from more than 21 feet away, in less than 1.5 seconds (see Tueller Drill). You do not get to say "hold on" I need to get into my crane stance. Unless you were already on guard, you won't see it coming.

The first sign that you are being attacked might be the fist hitting your face and, unless you have taken a punch to the face before, most people are just too stunned to do anything but fall down and cover. When you are on the ground and unarmed the fight is already over. You lose.

Bad guys, don't know that they are not supposed to attack in gangs and they don't know that head, knee and groin blows are forbidden. Nor do they know that it's not ok to use a gun, a baseball bat, or a knife and attack from behind. They are not fair, they are predators. Watch any NatGeo special to understand how they work. They hunt in packs. They single out the one they perceive of as weak and wait for a moment of inattention to attack.

It is NOT RANDOM to them. Only you. They've been hunting all night for the right prey.

I have women in my life that I would die for without a second thought. (though that is NOT plan A)

You can be sure I want them to have every possible advantage when I'm not there to protect them and be ready to help ME when I am. I don't want them or me in a fair fight. Ever. I want them to have overwhelming force at their command regardless of the size and number of people they face.

In my opinion going to a martial art makes sense when you have run out of bullets, knives, batons, rocks, pepper spray, and still haven't be able to run away.

Who knows, your crane stance might cause him to die laughing.

From Space Shuttles to Trains.

Obama has said that he would like to concentrate on high speed trains.

I've been reflecting on the last flight of the shuttle and have decided that this is a great metaphor for the entire Obama administration.

When Obama took office we had a Space Shuttle and plans to go to Mars.
Now they hope to convince the taxpayers that we have enough money to afford trains.

So I've been having this running debate on an anti-gun blog and it occurred to me that the debate is totally NOT about guns. It's truly about first principles. We will never agree on the meaning of 'common sense' so the idea of us agreeing on anything is likely impossible.

At the national level we are all left with the uneasy feeling that there is no real difference between the parties. Likely because there isn't. It's better at the local levels and as the tea party folks infiltrate and gain control of the levers of power we have SOME hope of fiscal changes. The problem is that fiscal responsibility is just the tip of the 'personal' responsibility iceberg and, as a nation, we are life times away from being ready for people to be personally responsible in the way the founders intended again.

On the Smallest Majority site he quoted a former blogger that went by the moniker "ironbear" I wish I had said these words because it so totally defines the conflict between the 'left' and the 'right' and WHY they act like horse's asses when they are confronted with someone that disagrees with them.

Iron Bear wrote these words before the rise of the Tea Party, but they are prescient in terms of the left's reaction to them.

It would be a mistake to paint the conflict exclusively in terms of "cultural war," or Democrats vs Republicans, or even Left vs Right. The problem is that when "education" doesn't go as fast or achieve the desired thinking, we end up being the butt of jokes and ridicule, as if our message can be blunted by that.

Perhaps they are right. The John Stewarts of the world provide the majority of the "news" to the young college aged people and they very deftly use comedy to make fun of "persons of narrow views"

By the way. Don't try "reason" they don't work that way. All they will understand in the end is the word "NO".

This man agreed to not deploy a missile shield that might protect us or our ally Israel from attack, at the request of Russia, for NOTHING in return while demanding that Israel negotiate with a group of terrorists that do not recognize their right to exist and have have sworn their destruction. Somehow he also found time to return a bust of Winston Churchill to England that was loaned to us as a token of the UK's support after 9/11 and give the Queen of England DVDs that she can't play.

Next he proceeded to spend so much money that even the Chinese started being reluctant to buy our bonds, on such dubious ventures as bailing out Wall Street, nationalizing a car company and taking control of large financial industries. He actually managed to do this in a way that caused the Russians and the French to lecture us on Capitalism. His promise that unemployment would not go above 8.5% IF we let him spend this money was quickly forgotten as he invented a new term for measuring unemployment progress. "Jobs Saved or Created".

Then came the "Summer Of Recovery" where he passed an unconstitutional health care bill hated by 60% of the people and even fewer people were working at the end of that summer than the beginning.

He followed this by additional spending on projects for (to fund?) union supporters seemed to make no difference; except leaving us 14 TRILLION dollars in debt with yearly 1.5 trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. This in turn, sent the real unemployment (u6) rate soaring to 16% and the real inflation rate (which includes food and fuel) to 8.5%.

He added unelected, unvetted and unconfirmed 'tzars' to the governments payroll, some of which were admitted Communists, in such numbers that Congress almost took note. Did I mention that their salaries are undisclosed as well?

This man, that loudly criticized Bush for his handling of hurricane Katrina, actually managed to make Bush look good by showing how HE handled the BP oil spill. The net result was the loss of 20 thousand jobs, oil rigs leaving the gulf, and a further ban on off shore drilling at a time when we desperately need affordable fuel.

The housing market collapsed further (can you go below zero?), the banks are still not making loans, and now he thinks that the way to fix this problems is to.. Wait for it… Yeah.. He wants to "invest" (aka spend) MORE money on infrastructure as if that will help people get loans and buy houses.

So the press calls this the "new normal" as if that will make it better.

27 states sued and a federal court ruled that the Health Care Bill was unconstitutional. In response, he said that the government? would IGNORE the courts ruling and proceed as if nothing had happened. If you or I did this we would be arrested for contempt and tossed in jail, but he put his hand on a bible and SWORE to protect and defend the Constitution and the press reports it like it means nothing.

Leaked documents now show that not only did he funnel money to Mideast dictators that we know are not only selling drugs but are also talking to and influencing the people that provided haven for the planners of the 9/11 attacks.

He GAVE the nuclear secrets of our greatest friend in the world (well the Brits WERE our best friends) to the Russians to sweeten a START treaty that even the experts agreed we don't need and would do little good.

Egypt's collapse may close the Suez Canal, cause fuel shortages, and provoke another war in the Mideast or an attack on Israel and even his envoy and his secretary of state are saying opposite things to the press.

In response to all of this, the press runs a picture saying that he is JUST LIKE REAGAN almost ON Ronnie's birthday.

The intruder who punched out a Chandler man while stealing beer at a keg party picked the wrong victim.

The man, who had been attempting to defend his wife during the beer theft, had a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Fearing for his life and under attack, he pulled out a gun and fatally shot two men believed by police to be gang members early Sunday morning.

A similar experient is "The Smoke Filled Room" where, if you are alone you might get up and run, but if there are other people there ignoring the smoke, you might also ignore it. (In the video the others were in on the experiment)

So here is how to combat this in your own life, according to chuck..

Anytime you see someone struggling or needing some sort of help. Like. "old lady drops her loaf of bread at the store, or woman trying to get a stroller through a door.." Simple, non dangerous everyday moments..

Turn towards the problem.
Always, always. Take immediate action. Don't look to see if someone else will help. That someone is you and the time is right now. If it helps imagine R. Lee Ermy *gently* asking you if you are waiting for an invitation to get your ass moving.

It's not the act of helping the old lady, it's the mental commitment to never hesitate. Imagine doing it now, then do it when you have the chance.

If you do this every time you have a chance you will be surprised how quickly "immediate action" becomes part of your life. It doesn't hurt that you also are a better person for it and your wife and neighbors will think of you as a darn nice guy. "Always the first one to step up and help."

All that goodwill is just a bonus..

Just like every cat is a lion in their heart, Only you will know that you are really a hard core bad ass practicing immediate action drills for emergency situations.

I am in favor of every congressman, senator the moment they arrive in Washington are sat down and given a high school civics final that they have to score an 85% or better on, a freshman college level macro and micro economics test that they must score a 85% or better on, and the citizenship test that legal immigrants must pass to get their green cards. If they fail any of these tests they are immediately sent home and their state told to send us someone else. No retests, no second chances and you can't run for that office again for another 20 years.

The more I think about it. The score on the tests should be THE application to run.
